Want to take a Kauai Cat home?
If you want to take a Kauai cat home with you, here are some basic instructions to help you in this process.
Alaska, Hawaiian and Delta airlines are the only airlines that will take cats “in cabin” with Alaska AL being slightly simpler. Please refer to your airline’s web page for detailed instructions (see bottom of page). We can try to answer questions, but the airline is your best bet for specific questions.
1) Make reservations with your airline for kitty (Alaska $100, Hawaiian $125, Delta $95 but prices may change). Only you can do this to fly in cabin. We can not help.
2) Purchase a soft side carrier (try PetCo). We always us a towel and/or puppy pad in bottom of carrier to help contain accidents.
3) Be prepared to take kitty out at TSA – ask for a secure room in case kitty escapes. Some people have purchased a harness and leash to help control the kitty.
4) Hawaiian and Delta require a health certificate/rabies issued no more than 10 days before flying. Alaska AL requires no paperwork.
5) You can go to any vet for a Health Certs, but Kauai Humane Society Sunday or Tuesday walk in vet clinic between noon-5PM (certificates, rabies and FVRCP are about $120 – see their web page for details) is a quick option.
6) The airlines that permit bringing a kitty on board have their own rules. PLEASE refer to the details on their web pages below.
7) If you are home, there is a remote possibility we can still help you adopt a specific kitty, but realize with such a small volunteer group and no fosters, it may be hard for us to find that specific kitty and get it ready to fly in cargo. Our costs for one cat in one crate are about $400, which includes crate, health cert, rabies, FVRCP, and flight. If overnight accommodations are required in Seattle, add $150. We do appreciate donations to help with the costs.
